12 Months; 18 Projects
It's time for me to review all my knitting projects from the past year. Are you ready to take a walk in my knitting life in 2017?
In late 2006 I bought a second blueberry acrylic yarn for $40 at the Spinrite Factory Outlet in Listowel, Ontario, where you can buy a second yarn batch for $40. With this yarn I first made a blanket for my guest room , then a hoodie for one of my nephews, then a turtleneck for a friend (who told me she loved this yarn as much as she wanted me to be a guest. Afghan room ). There were still 250 grams of cranberry fiber left, but after three rounds I had no other plans for the yarn and hid it in anticipation of my fate. Then, in December 2016, while thinking about what to crochet for my friend Olivia's baby girl from storage, I looked at the leftover blueberry boucle and thought it could make a little 12 month jacket and would be an interesting color too the back. Her top – Olivia, olive eyes, medium brown hair and light olive skin (as you might have guessed, she has a big name).
I searched the Ravelry model database for a children's jacket model that goes well with thick yarn. I found a couple of styles that I didn't really like, but their model page at least confirms that 250 grams of bouclé yarn should be enough to create the style and size of jacket I had in mind when trying to do so much to wear. information hoods. I ended up getting a model I already had in my library, Smoke with Sheep and Shoes , designed by Debbie Bliss (and featured in the Ravelry member's project photo above), and adapted it.
The pattern calls for heavy DK threads, so I'll keep a calculator and notepad handy to recreate the set number of stitches and rows while I'm at it. I don't like floppy disks, so I chose plain necklaces. I don't like the details on the sleeves, so I made the cuffs of the stripe match the hem and knitted the rest of the sleeves in stockinette stitch. I would like to knit my pocket forward but I'm not sure if I have enough yarn so it's best to stick to the patch pocket technique the design calls for so I have the freedom to do this with the rest not to do jacket is ready. . . This leaves enough thread for two pockets, but I only made one because I think it looks better that way, with two pockets it's very symmetrical. And instead of weaving hearts into the pockets with moss or stretch stitches, I made hearts out of beige yarn left over from another blanket to brighten up the jacket a bit.
I am very satisfied with the result. The jacket looks good and the cut is quite good. I rarely work with synthetic yarns anymore, but acrylic bouquets are an exception: they are surprisingly light, comfortable and easy to wear. However, it can be a little frustrating to work with as you can barely see the details woven into it. When working with a bow, it's best to use a simple pattern. I wouldn't do a more complicated pattern than this jacket. So when I'm working on a mesh corset, I find myself rolling my eyes all the time and spending a lot of time figuring out which bands have elastic and which go with the face and which bands need to go through the corset. the other as they passed. Even when working with a boucle, mistakes in the work are lost in the same way and weave in very quickly.
This jacket used 235g of coir yarn and I only had 20g of blueberries left over. Counting the boxes and the three sweaters, I can't say I didn't get the $40.
In 2014 the good folks at Darn Good Yarn sent me a free sample of their product which you can see in the picture above. DK's Roaming Silk Thread Scroll (which doesn't seem to have a Ravelry page) has been in my stash for two and a half years as I pondered how best to use it. While I found this thread interesting, I haven't used (or seen) any pink, purple, yellow, or light blue, so it ruled out any design for me. My granddaughter Cauliflower loves these colors and they look beautiful so I first set them up as her target recipient and then decided last year that this yarn would work well as a contrasting color on a sweater for her 8th birthday present.
I searched Ravelry's model database for a sweater model for a girl looking for two DK colors and found the My Colors Beautiful Xweater model designed by Elena Nodel. It is absolutely beautiful, beautifully shaped and the lovely floral pattern of the fair would show off the various silk threads beautifully. Then I went to Romney Wools with rolls of silk, where I tried to find a matching base color for the sweater. I chose 350 grams of Loyal DK in light blue.
And here is a size 8 sweater. It is a very written pattern, very detailed, clear and easy to understand. I'm overall happy with my version of the sweater, although I wanted to use a lighter blue as the base color as some stitches were lost due to the blue blending with the blue of the silk and fabric. Believers are very similar. Those little quibbles aside, the colors turned out to be an interesting combination that would look great on a cauliflower with fair skin, blue eyes, and light brown hair.
With additional yarn I made the same hat. The sweater, hat, dollar store coloring book, notebook, and box of crayons I bought together made a really nice 8th birthday gift.
I have 10 grams of new Loyal left and am using a half 100 gram roll of Silk Roving DK meaning this project has resulted in a net reduction in inventory of 40 grams. Now I have to think about how to use the other half of the Silk Road. I really hope this project makes the most of it.
In 2016 I knitted this DK and Alegria Manos del Uruguay knit sweater in green, pictured above, using a green ball. This project turned out to be a big mistake as the green DK literally refused to dance like before and the end product looked like a bad result. I quickly realized I would never use them and now I need to make a project plan for *two* threads instead of one: green and joy. My first attempt to open the cache resulted in at least two other projects finding the cache. It was like decapitating a hydra. Glad I fell in love with this Glee thread myself.
I was looking for a model on Ravelry that requires 200 grams of finger hair and came across this model which is Trestle Grace Ann Farrow. Only 100 grams of contrasting colors are needed, but I think it will be enough as Joy will have enough to make a pair of socks. My next step was to visit Romney Wools and pick a base color. I chose 400 grams Alpaca Merino Fine from Estelle Yarns in 411, a beautiful dark olive green.
And here is my finished sweater. I'm happy with that. The yarns work well together and although I don't have a skirt that would go with this outfit, the sweater would look great with jeans, some olive khaki and some olive velvet pants I made a few years ago. Although the look of the sweater hasn't changed, I've made some technical changes. I have Ravelry users who also wrote this article to thank them for saving me time with my knitting, because as I was browsing through their project pages, I noticed that many of them were complaining about the belt becoming too tight was tight and the shells used under the sleeves did not fit . and make the armpit area very large. I enlarged the belt and removed the right case. I also shortened the sweater by two inches because it's otherwise 25 inches long, while 23 inches is the perfect length for me. Luckily I did, otherwise I would have run out of thread. I only have 30 grams of Estelle left and I doubt that will be enough to make the sweater two centimeters longer. I also used 130 grams of Joy instead of the 100 grams on the template, but luckily I had two skeletons.
Both Alegria and Estelle are great yarns and fun to work with, but both have a downside. I noticed that Alegria faded shortly after washing (I used the Alegria sweater and the spring green in two washes to regain the spring green yarn). There is a key difference between the skein used to sew the Fatal Jumper and the unused skein. I didn't intend to photograph it at the time, but the difference can be seen in the details photographed above: I used scrap yarn to begin with, and the top stripe, knitted from fresh yarn, was noticeably lighter than the bottom stripe. In my opinion, old and new yarn more or less go together after a few washes.
As for Estelle's fingers, it turns out to be one of those strands that tend to tug on your hair. I kept ripping my cat's hair and fur while knitting, which isn't good for future socks. Oh I'm still glad I did that part. This is a very beautiful sweater design. As I often say in my knitting reviews, knitting projects are more like beginner projects and it takes an experienced stylist to create a knitting project that looks professional and sophisticated. And like the Amande t-shirt I designed in 2016, this is a modern sweater with a '30s twist.
When I finished this project I had 30 grams of new Estelle thread left over and used 130 grams of spare Alegria thread for a net loss of 100 grams. Not bad and I have enough two threads to do something else which you will discuss later will read in this post.
These are the 2017 sandals I sew for my dad every year. I think this is the twelfth pair I've made. My father had a severe case of Rheumatoid Arthritis, particularly in his knees and feet. His shoes used to hurt so much that they broke. He wanted special shoes, but he refused to spend the money they would cost him or customize them so that my mother could afford them. for her. These sandals with special shock-absorbing heels allow you to at least when you are at home comfortably walking around the house. The pattern is the Vogue knit pattern from the winter 1992/1993 issue . I modified the pattern by crocheting two heels for each sandal (one of the yarns used for the top and bottom of the durable craft yarns), threading two yarn storage mats between each pair of heels and weaving them together in a loop. Edge, then knit the top crochet. I also made heels with elastic thread, otherwise they did not resist. Dad wore every pair of sandals until they broke after a year so I used loose yarn or better yet chunky yarn I had on hand and if I had to cut the yarn off with a second yarn that was fine. with the. I'm using yarn from my stash here. I didn't have enough chunky yarn that I used for the upper to even make the sole, so this time I knit it with black yarn. When I don't have enough black yarn to make a second rug, I use the large dark blue yarn I have for the soles of my feet. To see this you need to turn the inside of the sandal. I'm not sure Dad would like those colorful black, brown and gold threads as he dislikes brown and finds gold too light for him, but the sandals looked dark and calm enough to match Christmas morning. Hey, that's not light pink.
This project requires 150 grams of yarn.
The plans for this project began to take shape when I saw these two frames in my yarn box and was amazed at how well the colors matched. I think a third shade of orange or another white color will go with it and also allow me to knit whatever I want. I've had these coils for a long time and their gums are long gone. I'm pretty sure the orange wool is the classic Patons orange wool , but I don't know what turquoise wool is, although I do know it's pure wool.
I searched Ravelry for a template that requires 100 grams of two contrasting colors and found this Frost All Grown Up by Unnur Eva Arnarsdóttir. Then I went to Romney Wools and bought 500 grams of Turquoise Diamond Galway Heathers yarn. My color scheme, rather than the harsh colors of the winter pattern, would be the light, warm colors that work best for me.
And here is the result. The model is very well written, the sweater fits without problems. I was a little unhappy that this project didn't require as much yarn as the model showed. I used about 315 grams of turquoise yarn (the scheme called 500 grams), about 25 grams of dark turquoise yarn and about 20 grams of orange wool yarn (when the scheme called 100 grams each). This means that this project, which was intended to shrink my tank, increased it by 40 grams. (I managed to convert a Galway Briar Roll, otherwise 100 grams more). I really liked the resulting sweater, but didn't really need it, and the lesson learned was that I needed to be more careful when planning my shredding project. I should have realized that this sweater requires less yarn than pictured and I should also avoid buying too many yarns to use up the small yarns I already have.
In March 2017 one of my closest friends surprised me with a gift of two skeins he bought from Pembroke Farm on Prince Edward Island while he and his family were vacationing in PEI. The strands take on a beautiful deep pink color that's more pink. There's no indication of thickness or fiber content on the tag and the yarn isn't listed on Ravelry, but it's definitely heavy and feels like pure wool. I was looking for a pattern that would work with this yarn weight and amount and found a pattern for Aunt Julie's Scarf .
Here is the finished project. Knitted very quickly - the only thing that slowed me down was some pattern mistakes so I knitted and ripped for a while until I figured out where the mistake was.
Here are the details up close. I really wish my camera would capture the colors a little better. The colors are much warmer than here.
I still have 80 grams of yarn left. At first I thought I'd grab the right yarn and knit a proper hat, but this color turned out to be so difficult to match with everything that I gave it up after a few months of shopping. If I had to start this project over again, I would weave this yarn into a scarf that I could throw away when I was done.
Last year my stepmom Gayle asked me to make her a pair of sandals that she saw on Pinterest. I told him I can't do it until this year and when he complained about me having to wait I asked him what happened to the pair I did a year ago . He told me his heels were worn out.
I plan to buy sneakers in April. But just as she was about halfway through her project before the sandals arrived, Gayle was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The day we waited to find out if the tumor was cancer, I walked around the house and thought about breathing. A relief is that the test results show that there is a 95% chance that the tumor is benign. Gale is then scheduled for neurosurgery on May 1st. I put my current project on hold and started making slippers for Gail to pick up while he was in the hospital and recovering at home.
I bought the Rea Jarvenpaa sock sandals and asked Gail what color I wanted her sandals to be. He told me in black and white. I have a "winter white" yarn so I bought a black wool yarn as well as a gray sole for the sole to make these sandals more durable than the latest Gale Sides which are natural wool. . wool yarn
And now, after a big disappointment, the sandals are ready to wear. The instructions are very incomplete. The model does not indicate how much thread is needed. Half of the instructions for weaving black noses, which serve as the basis for this usury, are simply missing: no instructions on how to sew a heel or thumb on the form to enrich the roosters. осков, ênных emu, есть отдельные, о, оскольку они ебовали ого оличества етель, ем е, оторые о ача а. ойке азано, олько етель о абрать краев, е ет овка. edalion to oltku absutstvuet. for everyone it is very cheap, with a payment of 5.00 euros (euro) for a prize, and another is just a bunch of it to write. That year, when it came time to plan a sweater for the day I was born, Baga, my grandson's niece, started doing it when she approached Ravelli when she found a subconscious. In any case, I stuck with the eye name 1209-08 from Sandnes Design. In my hand I held a motorcycle with dark green bushes DK, suitable, so to speak, for contrasting flowers.
